Because it is not just for the glory! HackOTT prizes
We are excited to see you all in just a few days. I am sure you are all chomping at the bits waiting for the API announcements, so in the meantime let us entertain you with our HackOTT prizes.
1ST PRIZE: A Samsung 46″ 1080p LED HDTV provided by our awesome sponsor Zip.ca. If you have room for this baby in your place all you will need is a zip.ca subscription and you are all set! 3 months zip.ca subscription included!
2ND PRIZE: An Android phone of your choice, depending on your carrier or preference. Up to $500 value. HTC anyone?
3RD PRIZE: Kindle 3G, the smaller, faster Kindle with free 3G, built in wi-fi and storage for 3,500 books!
Curious about the criteria for judging? The judges will be looking for:
- Utilization of the API functionality (it doesn’t matter how many APIs you use). You need to use at least one of the provided APIs. There is no limit as to how many APIs you use.
- Usefulness of the application (for its intended purpose and audience)
- Creativity and ingenuity
- General effort involved
- Size of the team: obviously if you are a single developer who manages to get your application completed in a 6 hours, judges are going to be excited to talk to you! Not to discourage you from working in a team – but hey we all know how hard it is to build an app by yourself!
This time around we are going beyond prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The team at Zip.ca will be awarding a Boxee Box for best usage of the Zip.ca API. And the judges will be awarding an assortment of great prizes to applications that merit honors! Prizes include:
- a LED Binary watch
- ThinkGeek Messenger bag: this is the holy grail of messenger bags!
- Gift certificates for 3 months subscriptions to zip.ca
- A Make magazine subscription
Darcy White will also be providing a set of 5 unique rubber band powered airplanes named the Squirrel. We are going to get them up flying into the Shopify conference room and perhaps if I get my act together the Squirrel could compete against my drone?
