HackTO Second Edition!

Presented by HackDays in partnership with YellowAPI

 YellowAPI.com

We just wrapped up HackVan and HackRegina in March and are now a short 12 days away from HackTO. I still remember our first HackTO. It was the first hackathon Corey and I organized in Toronto. It was awesome and we learned some great lessons about organizing hackathons (who organizes a hackathon in mere days?). Despite everything, our first hackathon was fantastic because it brought together some of the brightest developers in Toronto and our start up and tech community. In less than 8 hours 50 developers put together an impressive 13 applications with APIs provided and supported by our local startups and the tech community at large. We were blown away by the support from our community and sponsors and decided that we were going to hack our way around Canada. That was the beginning of our hacking adventures and since then we have held hackathons in Ottawa, Regina, Vancouver and Waterloo. And we are planning to continue connecting Canada’s tech communities.

So now, we are back with the second edition of HackTO and this one promises to be bigger than our first HackTO and of course we are looking forward to an awesome line up of APIs, developers, sponsors and support from our tech and startup community – again!

First the event details:

  •  Who: everyone! old friends, new friends, old hackers, new hackers. You are all welcome
  • What: HackTO #2. An all day hackathon

Hackdays hackathons are awesome gatherings of hackers/developers who work either in a team or alone to build applications with publicably available APIs. HackDays started with HackTO(#1) in Toronto and had such a great time that we rolled out HackDays across Canada thanks to an incredible sponsorship from the YellowPages. Our first destination outside of Toronto was Montreal. hackMTL was a blast and the winners are enjoying their awesome prizes! We also wrapped HackOTT in Ottawa and HackWaterloo in Waterloo and are now looking forward to helping anyone across Canada interested in organzing a hackathon.

For HackMTL and HackOTT, we rounded up various public APIs from local tech startups and have made them available to local developers. We will be doing the same again for HackTO version 2!

Each HackDays API will be supported by someone totally familiar with the API (so you won’t be wasting time trying to find answers to your questions) and we will provide a great hacking  environment with caffeeine, pizza, snacks and prizes (and glory)! Working in teams or solo–and with expert guidance from our API sponsors–developers compete to create the coolest application using one or more of the available APIs. And just to make things interesting, this is all done in a few hours!

If you’re with either a technology company, a start up or a non profit organization that you think ought to be involved, or if you have any questions, drop us an email would love to hear from you.

BTW this is an all day event; breakfast, lunch and snacks provided! Our schedule will look something like this:

  • 9:00 – Breakfast and introductions: Meet your HackDays organizers and all the developers, get acquainted with the space + final schedule + grab a breakfast of champions!
  • 9:30 – API presentation: learn about the APIs available. Each API provider will have 5 minutes to introduce their API, discuss its salient features and get you excited about using it.
  • 10:15 – Open Planning: come up with hacking idea and build a team. This is a white board exercise: if you have an idea that you would like to work on, just put its name down on the white board; if you are looking to build a team, identify yourself to other developers with the skill sets that you need. HackVAN Judges

What would a hacking event be without judges! Our HackVAN judges will be picking the winners this afternoon. In alphabetical order:

Kenshi Arasaki, Founder, A Thinking Ape.
Kenshi has dreams of creating the next great mobile social experience.  Prior to co-founding A Thinking Ape, he was helping to engineer great things at Amazon.  Kenshi and his partner Wilkins went through the YCombinator program in 2008 and have now joined forces with Eric Diep to create addictive mobile applications. When he’s not mapping the destiny of the future mobile world, he likes to flail his arms around and yell ‘wild boar!’.  For the most part, it’s received kindly.

Boris Mann, Entrepreneur and Digital Strategist.
Boris Mann has been blogging and using web tools for over 10 years. What began as an exploration of digital tools became a career building startups and web solutions. Boris has a passion for engaging communities, from distributed open source teams to the local innovators in Vancouver. He is one of the founding organizers of Northern Voice, the first Canadian blogging conference. He also is active in many developer communities, helping put on BarCamps, DemoCamps, and the Open Source CMS Summit on multiple continents. He holds a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Victoria, where he went after a coin flip made him choose between university and becoming a professional chef.

Carl Schmidt, Chief Technology Officer, Unbounce
Carl has been building software professionally for over 20 years, and specifically has been constructing web-based software since 1996. As CTO and Chief Software Architect for one of Bodog’s largest suppliers, he is well-versed in building and maintaining high-performance, highly available web sites.

  • When: Friday August 19, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Where: The Irish Heather: 210 Carrall Street in Gastown
  • What: Beers, chips, snacks, cheers.

Come and meet API providers, developers and your hacking community.

  • Where: Mozilla Vancouver, 163 West Hastings Street, Suite 200- Vancouver
  • Time: 9 AM to 6 PM
  • Registration: we are sold out!

HackVAN  is a disposable cups free event! So that means you will need to bring your portable mug, thermos or whatever! If you don’t have one, well you still have time to head to the store and get yourself a fancy one. Make sure you can use it for both cold beverages and hot ones and you will be set for the next decade! Help us reduce and reuse! And now on to what you really have been waiting for.

HackVAN Schedule:

  • 9:00 – Breakfast and introductions: Meet your HackVAN organizers and all the developers, get acquainted with the space + final schedule + grab a breakfast of champions!
  • 9:30 – API presentation: learn about the APIs available. Each API provider will have 5 minutes to introduce their API, discuss its salient features and get you excited about using it.
  • 10:15 – Open Planning: come up with hacking idea and build a team. This is a white board exercise: if you have an idea that you would like to work on, just puts its name down on the white board; if you are looking to build a team, identify yourself to other developers with the skill sets that you need. If you are looking for ideas, identify yourself to other developers as well.
  • 10:30 – Hacking setup and start. You claim a little spot of the office with your team or by yourself and start working on your project. All the API providers will be on hand the entire day to provide support.
  • Noon – Lunch
  • 1:00 – Hacking
  • 5:00 – Application presentation – 3 minutes for each presenter!
  • 6:00 – Judging and prizes
  • 6:30 – Off to nearby pub for celebrations!

Am I allowed to use third party APIs (APIs not provided via HackVAN) to build my application?

Yes. But your usage of the third party APIs needs to be in addition to the HackVAN APIs. Also keep in mind that judging is partially based on utilization of the provided APIs, though, so their use should be prominent. So you can use any API you wish to use during HackVAN as long as you use at least one of the provided APIs.

What if I don’t know anyone when I get to HackVAN or if I don’t have any ideas as to what to build?

Oh that’s an easy one: if you don’t know anyone, that will last about 10 seconds once you join us. Seriously. And as to ideas: not to worry, there will be plenty to choose from. The better question: will you have enough time to build your application and showcase it to the judges at the end of the day. We will do our best to connect you to other developers. Have a look at the API provided, the API gallery for each provider and do some research ahead of time on the APIs and what other developers have previously built.

What if I have an idea and a team already?

That’s a great start. Bring your team. Bring your idea. And get working as soon as you get to HackVAN. Perhaps we will be able to witness the birth of your startup right then and there!

How large can my team be?

Teams can be as large or as small as you like. Solo is okay, too. A 2-3 people team is ideal typically.

Now I love hacking events but what do I win if I build the best application ever?

HackVAN is not just all guts. There is glory and prizes!

What to bring:

  • Your Guestlist receipt. You don’t need to print it, an email you can show us is fine. HackVAN is sold out.
  • Your laptop.
  • Your mobile device if you are developing a mobile app.
  • Cables, chargers and connectors for any of the above.
  • A power bar – there are never enough power bars to go around!
  • Your data stick if you have one – could come in handy if our network gets overloaded :)
  • Your sense of humor and your ability to get along with everyone while in tight quarters!
  • Your portable coffee cup – we try to keep disposables to a minimum in our events.

What we will provide:

  • APIs, API support
  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Coffee, tea, juice, pop
  • Snacks and beers at beer o’clock
  • Wireless internet access
  • A large LCD display for presentations, with HDMI and SVGA input (we recommend you bring your own connectors, but we will have some handy as well)
  • Smiles!
  • An awesome developer community!

If I have questions whom do I get in touch with?

You can drop us an email anytime with any question. We are happy to help. You can call me directly 416 624 7540.

Ready? Set? Go! Announcing HackVAN APIs.

This is what you have been waiting for this whole time! The HackVAN APIs are here. In alphabetical order. Remember the rules of HackVAN:

  • There are no limitations as to how many APIs you use
  • You can use any APIs you wish to use, even APIs not provided by HackVAN, as long as you use one (1) of the provided HackVAN APIs. It is that simple!

Context.IO is leading a new wave of innovation on email. Conversations, collaboration and document exchange happens in email on a daily basis. Context.IO provides a unique email API that makes it easy for application developers to retrieve that information and leverage it in applications such as CRM, document management, collaboration and project management. The Context.IO Email API has been in production for a few months and is already tracking more than 40 million emails in mailboxes kept in sync via IMAP.

FreshBooks supplies online billing services, allowing freelancers and small businesses manage their cashflow and get paid faster. The FreshBooks API allows 3rd party developers to expand and build on the FreshBooks platform. Access FreshBooks account data using HTTP and XML to create web and desktop applications that integrate with a FreshBooks account. The API documentation is online and implementation examples are a plenty!

Shopify

Shopify is a hosted application that allows you to set up an online store to sell your goods. It lets you organize your products, customize your storefront, accept credit card payments through payment gateways, track and respond to orders — all without the hassle of running a physical store. The Shopify API  is implemented as XML over HTTP using all four verbs (GET/POST/PUT/DELETE), basically a REST API! with full documentation.

Idée, the good folks who brought you TinEye – the greatest reverse image search engine ever! – will be providing access to their multicolor search called Piximilar. You won’t be seeing the documentation for this API until you show up on Saturday. But you can certainly start dreaming about the multicolor applications you can be creating. The API basically allows you to index images and make them searchable using colors. Very much like the multicolor lab where you get to search 10 million creative commons Flickr images by color!

Idée, will also be providing access to a second API: PixMatch. PixMatch can basically be thought about as your private TinEye! Given an image to look for PixMatch locates identical or modified images within or between large image collections. This is the API to use if you wish to launch a mobile application where you take a photograph of say a wine bottle label and get back information about that wine. This is exactly what Snooth does using the PixMatch API. Again access to the API and documentation will be provided at HackVAN.

Twilio provides infrastructure APIs for businesses to build scalable, reliable voice and text messaging apps. Using the Twilio APIs you can build applications that use the phone network to interact with people on landlines and cell phones all over the world. In just a few lines of code, you’ll have phones ringing. The Twilio API project gallery should give a few great ideas for your hack on Saturday!

Yellow Pages Group is Canada’s largest directory publisher. The YellowAPI powered by the Yellow Pages Group provides access to a large database of Canadian business content and allows direct streaming of local search content including video, photos, ad thumbs and more. Get geo-localized listings for map overlays and proximity search. The API allows anyone to build their own applications and mashups by providing dynamic local business data. Get documentation for the YPG API.

HackVAN Prizes

Are you ready? Hell yeah! We are gonna make it worth your while to build a killer application at HackVAN. OK?

HackVAN:

  • When: Vancouver, Saturday August 20, 2011
  • Where: Mozilla Vancouver, 163 West Hastings Street, Suite 200- Vancouver
  • Time: 9 AM to 6 PM
  • Registration: is now open. And HackVAN is sell out so get your ticket now!

We will be announcing the APIs for HackVAN in the coming days but in the meantime, how about some prizes for the winners of the best application?

Vancouver, here we come! #HackVan

Ready, set? Go! HackDays’ next destination is Vancouver. Yes, we are going West, West, West. And hoping that you will welcome us with open arms. We already feel the love from the GROW conference as this hackday event is being organized in con-junction with GROW. As a matter of fact HackVan is going to be held one day after the GROW conference on Saturday August 20. Mark this date in your calendar right now!

  • When: Vancouver, Saturday August 20, 2011
  • Where: Mozilla Vancouver, 163 West Hastings Street, Suite 200- Vancouver
  • Time: 9 AM to 6 PM
  • Registration: is now open.

So what are HackDays?

HackDays are daily hackathons that we organize across Canada. We gather an awesome group of hackers/developers who work either in a team or alone to build applications with publicly available APIs. We started with HackTO in Toronto and had such a great time that we decided to roll out our hackathons across Canada. Our first destination outside of Toronto was Montreal. HackMTL was a blast and HackOTT and HackWaterloo followed hot on its heels! And now we are headed to Vancouver.

I would like to participate what do I need?

First you need to register. This will ensure that you are guaranteed a spot for the hackathon. There is a $10 registration fee. This provides you with access to the event, breakfast, lunch, drinks, snacks and participation with awesome developers. If you have a hard time paying $10 (because you are currently unemployed or a student) get in touch and we will find someone to sponsor you.

Who can participate?

Anyone who is interested in building an application. All you need to bring with you is your interest and motivation to get involved in building an application in a single day.

Why should I participate in this hackathon?

That’s an excellent question! When Corey and I started organizing hacking events in Toronto, we enjoyed meeting other like minded people, we enjoyed connecting them to other awesome people and learning about their interests, startups, and applications. We realized that we had a lot in common but most importantly: we were all builders. You want to participate because you are a builder and because you can’t imagine a better use for your Saturday then setting yourself up in an awesome environment, surrounded by like minded people, building an application to stretches your tech skills, imagination and interests. That’s why. You can always watch TV another day.

What if I don’t know anyone or if I don’t have any ideas as to what to build?

Oh that’s an easy one: if you don’t know anyone, that will last about 10 seconds once you join us. Seriously. Just come out and give it a try. I know you are shy and sometimes you need a kick in the a**. Consider this the kick in the a**. And as to ideas: not to worry, there will be plenty to choose from. The better question: will you have enough time to build your application and showcased it to the judges at the end of the day.

What if I have an idea and a team already?

Well, we want to see you at HackVAN. That’s a great start. Bring your team. Bring your idea. And get working as soon as you get to HackVAN. Perhaps we will be able to witness the birth of your startup.

How large can my team be?

Teams can be as large or as small as you like. Solo is okay, too. A 2-3 people team is ideal typically.

Now I love hacking events but what do I win if I build the best application ever?

HackVAN is not just all guts. There is glory and prizes!

What shall I expect when I get to HackVAN? What shall I bring and what does the schedule look like?

Expect that you will be spending the day with 40-60 other developers who are as keen as you are to build an application in a day and compete. This is a competition too after all.

We were very excited to be headed to Calgary but due to poor sign ups for our hackathon, we are canceling this one and rescheduling to later in the year. So Calgary: please welcome us to your great city and tell us where to get the word out about our Hackathon so we can all spend a day together building awesome applications! Like we did in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Waterloo. Stay tuned for our next Hackathon happening in Vancouver! Hello Vancouver!

If you can help us get the word out in Calgary or know anyone who can help us, please get in touch and let’s get this Calgary show on the road!
